GREENVILLE, S.C. — Actress Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville, Remember the Titans and the Scream franchise, died at the age of 36 after an accidental drug overdose, according to findings released by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.
Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, after she was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
The coroner’s findings, released in September, said the cause of death was the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. The manner of death was ruled an accident.
Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death
The specific cause of death had remained pending after Panettiere’s death while authorities completed the autopsy and toxicology testing.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office ultimately determined that the toxic effects of the five substances contributed to her death and classified the manner of death as accidental.
The autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.
Actress Found Unresponsive in Greenville
A 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest was received at approximately 1:51 p.m. on August 16 from a residence on Easley Bridge Road in Greenville.
Emergency responders found Panettiere unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. Advanced lifesaving measures were attempted, but she could not be revived.
She was pronounced dead at approximately 2:32 p.m., according to the coroner’s report. Panettiere had been temporarily staying at the residence.
Police previously said their preliminary investigation had not indicated signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death has continued.

Panettiere began acting as a child and went on to build a career across television and film.
She became widely known as Claire Bennet on the NBC series Heroes. She later starred as Juliette Barnes on Nashville, a role that earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
