LOS ANGELES — The music world is mourning the death of Peter Byrne, the singer, songwriter and co-founder of the British new wave duo Naked Eyes, who died at the age of 74.
Byrne died peacefully in Los Angeles on September 14, 2026, following a brief illness. His death was publicly announced on September 23.
Fans and fellow music lovers have been remembering Byrne for his distinctive voice and his role in creating some of Naked Eyes’ best-known songs during the 1980s.

Byrne formed Naked Eyes with Rob Fisher in 1982.
The duo went on to achieve international success after signing with EMI Records. Their debut album, released in the United States as Naked Eyes and in the United Kingdom as Burning Bridges, reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200.
Their biggest hit came with “Always Something There to Remind Me,” a synth-pop version of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song. The track reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983.
Naked Eyes followed with other successful songs, including “Promises, Promises,” “When the Lights Go Out” and “(What) In the Name of Love.”
Career Beyond Naked Eyes
Byrne’s work extended beyond his success with Naked Eyes.
In 1985, he provided backing vocals on Stevie Wonder’s “Part-Time Lover.” He also worked as a songwriter on projects connected to film and television.
After Rob Fisher died in 1999, Byrne continued recording and performing music.
He released the solo album The Real Illusion in 2001 under the name Pete Byrne and later continued performing and releasing music under the Naked Eyes name.

Born in Islington, North London, Byrne developed his musical career in England before finding international recognition with Naked Eyes.
His earlier musical work included collaborations with Jeff Starrs, Studio and Neon, where he performed alongside Rob Fisher and musicians who would later become associated with Tears for Fears.
